Fade February Finale – 2013

There was cause to celebrate this previous weekend at dutil., as we ushered out the month with our 2nd annual Fade February Finale. The event encourages raw denim enthusiasts to showcase their naturally faded jeans with the top three fades earning their owners new pairs of jeans. The winners were supplied with jeans generously provided by Railcar, Nudie and Naked & Famous.  We toasted the event’s success with complimentary beers supplied by Pabst Blue Ribbon  (for which we were very thankful!). We were also very fortunate to have the Static Captains provide coverage for the Vancouver event (click through to see their coverage). The turnout at both our Toronto and Vancouver locations was great and we were happy to see some new faces along with the usual suspects. It was great to see a few ladies join in on the fun too! Overall, we think Fade February 2013 was an amazing success and we thank you for your participation!

North American Denim vs. Japanese Denim pt. 2

Fade February Fact #23: Japan is home to numerous premium denim manufacturers, and Okayama is thought to be the best of the best.  It is best known known for its dye and indigo industry. North American Denim vs. Japanese Denim pt. 1

Fade February Fact #22: There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to choosing between Japanese and North American raw denim, but each have their own set of interesting details. Today we’re going to touch on one of the most prestigous North American denim mills; Cone Mill. Since 1895 Cone Mill has been ruling the denim manufacturing market.  By 1905 their White Oak plant had established the company as one of the biggest indigo dyeing operations in the world and that continues today.  By this time they were making denim for  Levi’s Strauss & Co. There are many brands that we carry at dutil. that uses  Cone Mill to manufacture their denim (for example, Tellason, Railcar Fine Goods, and of course, dutil.’s own Quintessential. series).

Whiskers, They Aren’t Just for Cats

Hip/Waist Whiskering                       Fade February Fact #16: A lot of jeans out there have already been broken in for the denim consumer, and one of the most common effects is whiskering. Whiskering fades develop from denim rubbing against itself when the wearer is sitting, or bending at the hips and waist, and have gotten their name due to the resemblance to whiskers on an animal.

What Colour are your Blue Jeans?

Naked & Famous Green Cast Denim                       Fade February Fact #15: Jeans can be found in a wide variety of washes and colours, but you may have noticed different tones and shades of your indigo jeans as well. The term ‘cast’ is used to describe the undertone of your blue jeans. Depending on the type of dye used, indigo denim can have a black, brown, green, red, or even yellow cast to it. The jeans we have featured here are Naked & Famous Green Cast Denim.

Hidden Rivets

Hidden Rivets Fade February Fact #13: As we learned yesterday, rivets are essential to our jeans staying in one piece, but they do have their draw backs in terms of functionality. In 1937 Levi’s began to cover their rivets due to customer complaints about damaging goods they came into contact with; such as furniture and saddles. These days you might notice that the rivets holding on your back pockets are covered by the construction of the pockets so you don’t go ripping up your chairs and couches.
