Long before it became the fashion and art commodity it is today, denim was the adopted utilitarian uniform of artists. Painters such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning (pictured above) and Diego Rivera have famously been immortalized in blue jeans and overalls. Although trends will continue to change over time, the history of denim and art are inevitably intertwined.dutil. Denim wants to pay homage to the long-running relationship between denim and art, in order to continue its legacy and relevance.

Local artists in the Vancouver community are invited to participate in our up-coming ‘denim art’ show. We want you to showcase your creativity by repurposing and reinterpreting blue jeans into literal ‘denim art’. dutil. Denim will supply the denim (up to 3 pairs per artist; artists are responsible for additional media); the artists are given complete creative freedom – the only catch is that the finished piece must be non-wearable.

This call for submissions is open to the public; you must be 18 years of age or older and a resident of the the greater Vancouver area. A total of 10 artists will be selected to participate, raffle and exhibit their finished projects at an art opening and raffle event (anticipated date is mid-October 2013), and showcased for a pre-determined amount of time at dutil.’s Vancouver location. All proceeds from the raffle will be divided evenly among the participating artists, with 25% of the total amount raised donated to The Arts Studio. dutil. Denim will not keep any of the proceeds from this event.

To participate in this EXCITING event, send your full name, city of residence, email or phone number and an example of your previous artwork (a link to a website or picture attachments will suffice) to dutil@dutildenim.com.

The deadline for applications is September 15th, 2013. The 10 artists selected will be invited to participate and will be notified on September 16th, 2013, where-in details regarding supply pick-up and art drop-off times will be disclosed.
