Selvage or selvedge, a re-appropriated version of the term ‘self-edge’, refers to the self-finished edges of a fabric. Selvage is the result of how the denim is woven; usually by hand on an old-style shuttle loom. For the denim enthusiast, raw, selvaged jeans are highly sought after for the old-style feel they represent.
The selvaged edge prevents the fabric from unraveling or fraying, and eliminates the need to stitch the edge of the denim. Furthermore, it represents the revival of an old-fashioned way of doing things by hand; handcrafted denim is authentic denim.
Below we have some images of the different types of selvage that we have in our store.
