Denim Poetry #1

ODE TO MY BLUE (jeans) I’ll wear them with me Woven can be my wild The old blues Made into new hues This is the naked I will become A kind of weight That will never whine Willing to dig down Deeper Into the holes and cracks I shape Into whatever shade is given Call me a cowboy Call me a wrangler Or call me a woman Dressed to impress As I wander Won’t you follow My blues I’ll bring them Never Hollow – Jenna Kennedy

Women’s Spring Fashion 2014

It may not feel like it yet, but spring is upon us – at least in the fashion world. February marks the beginning of an influx of spring styles in shops, and fashion-minded individuals are beginning to create mental look books and wish lists for the coming season. This year, you will find Spring 2014’s biggest denim trends manifest themselves in bruised and battered pieces with heavy abrasions, light washes, rips and tears.                       Calling back to the 1990’s is the “boyfriend jean” revival – this time, the best reinterpretations are loose, washed and distressed jeans that taper below the knee for an updated, modern look that feels more in place in 2014 than the 501s of the past. The updated jean can still be rocked with chunky boots or platform sneakers to keep the look authentic without looking like you have fallen victim to some form of sorcerous time travel. Another 90s revival trend – the crop top, is showing no signs of slowing down. In order to rock this short top without feeling too exhibitionistic, you will need a great pair of super high rise denim in your spring […]

Big Plans in 2014

This year, dutil. has a lot on-the-go. Below are some highlights of what to expect this year: We are launching our second production of the Quintessential Line with new fits and washes. For women, we will have a mid-rise skinny, as well as a high-rise skinny fit to flatter most body types. For men, we will launch a modern slim-straight leg, as well as a classic straight leg jean. We are also planning the first annual dutil. International Film Festival (DIFF), where international cinematographers will be able to submit films for display sometime in Fall 2014 – more on this later. Following the success of our first ever art event, we will host our second annual art event, and will be calling for submissions later this year. In order to keep up the momentum, dutil.’s offshoot brand, IDC (International Design Collective) will be launching a leather collaboration hat with Vancity Original Brand – details to follow. We have many more projects on the go, and will be revealing details in the coming months… 2014 is going to be a big one!

Pete Searson of Tellason & Eric Dickstein of dutil. Speak on the Qualitative Notion of Men’s Blue Jeans

A little while ago, we had a chance to catch up with Pete Searson of Tellason. Below is the audio and transcription of a few minutes of the interview that we found interesting.   INTERVIEW Pete Searson: “Now we’re designing our own fabrics and they’re exclusive to us…” Eric Dickstein: “What do you have to do, a thousand yards, what is it?” Pete Searson: “A lot more than that, the minimums are high – it’s more like 10 thousand, so you better like what you’ve designed, you know, ’cause it’s yours and we even buy the seconds so we’re nuts about it… you know, and one of the questions and maybe this is on your list too is like, “what makes Tellason different?” or whatever, it’s like hey, there’s so much great denim out there and good for everybody, that people are raising the water line for these qualitative notions of men’s blue jeans, you know, that’s what happening, that’s what really exciting about the denim market to us – not just what we’re doing, but like these other brands, they all have a real passion for this craft and good for them. But for us, designing and having the […]
