Men’s Fall Fashion 2013

This season, men are being pushed to try something different when it comes to their denim. Rather than the typical dark wash, slim-straight jean that has solidified itself as a staple in men’s wardrobes, designers are daring men to try prints, colours and interesting cuts. Perhaps inspired by the endearing bearded men of Duck Dynasty, camouflage has made a massive comeback, with the print showing up on denim and corduroy alike. This season’s camo is subtle and accessible to any guy interested in amping up their wardrobe. Brands like Globe and Naked & Famous make choosing a camouflage print economical.                     In addition to camouflage, washed denim is back and badder than ever. Deliberate, high-contrast washes are being paired with leather jackets and chukka boots, freshening the style and bringing it into 2013 and beyond. Scotch & Soda isn’t afraid to show bright fades on dark denim (seen below).                     More eco-friendly denim has also been showing as we become more and more aware of the importance of preserving our planet. Brands like Nudie and Tortoise have made it their mission to […]

Women’s Fall Fashion 2013

This Fall, it is evident that the motorcycle chic look is reigning supreme. With leather details showing up in unexpected places, the “bad girl” look is as easy as pulling on a t-shirt and pair of jeans with leather knee details, or pairing a leather sleeved jacket with a little black dress. You don’t think you can pull off the “bad girl” look, but want to participate in the trend? Try pairing denim and leather articles with a softer, more feminine piece, such as silk blouse.     It is becoming obvious that prints are here to stay. Wearing your printed jeans with a solid coloured top can make the trend very wearable on a daily level. Ballsier girls can pair their printed legs with a printed top in a complimentary colour family. When pairing prints, it is best to balance the busyness of the look by using one small print and one large print so the two don’t compete.       Another major trend we are seeing is the double denim look. Whether you wear a pair of jeans and a chambray shirt, or a denim dress with a jean jacket, it is easy to participate in this […]

Duck, Duck, Duck…Tortoise?

We are very proud to present the brand new, Tortoise Jeans hailing from Los Angeles, California. The brand boasts artisanal denim masterpieces, which utilize the highly eco-friendly “Wiser Wash” washing processes outlined below. Wiser Wash is a multi-pronged, eco-friendly initiative concentrated on revolutionizing the most environmentally harmful, but essential, step in the process of making jeans – the wash. The prongs: 1) 3. O-Zone: a revolutionary, patent-pending ozone application. This wash process uses a new generation of ozone technology in place of traditional, outdated methods that use toxic and harmful chemicals. This means, less machine time, lower temperatures and less compound processes. As a result, the energy consumed at TORTOISE Jeans is 85% less than many other wash facilities. 2) In conjunction with the patent-pending “3. O-zone process”, the “Starfish” washing process, eliminates the need for pumice stone, which is crucial when considering the environmental impact of using the stone; excavating the material, processing, transportation, and the sludgy byproduct that is left after processing. Starfish is a locally sourced ingredient that can be used over and over again, creating nearly zero waste. 3) “Nue Water” is what separates TORTOISE from other garment laundries in the world. The idea is to […]

dutil. Denim Calls for “Denim Art” Submissions

Long before it became the fashion and art commodity it is today, denim was the adopted utilitarian uniform of artists. Painters such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning (pictured above) and Diego Rivera have famously been immortalized in blue jeans and overalls. Although trends will continue to change over time, the history of denim and art are inevitably intertwined.dutil. Denim wants to pay homage to the long-running relationship between denim and art, in order to continue its legacy and relevance. Local artists in the Vancouver community are invited to participate in our up-coming ‘denim art’ show. We want you to showcase your creativity by repurposing and reinterpreting blue jeans into literal ‘denim art’. dutil. Shades for All

It’s time to trade in your winter ‘blues’ for something in a cheerier hue! Don’t be intimidated by the brights – channel the new season with a pair of cropped skinnys in Grass Green or a bright Poppy. Get out of your denim funk by rocking a vest or fitted jean jacket. It’s time to celebrate spring’s arrival with a joyous print – paired with an understated t-shirt or light blouse and a pair of flats, a charming French wallpaper is casual enough for everyday wear. For those of us who prefer a more subdued welcome: a classic, tailored chino in peach or sea green is a subtle nod to the season.
