The Next Decade of Denim

The Next Decade of Denim
The past ten years have been characterized by several important denim trends: we saw the skinny jean/jegging trend take over the world in the early 2010s; by the mid-2010s, raw denim was a household term; and near the end of the 2010s, we saw the beginning of the vintage denim movement that we're now in the midst of. So what are the next ten years going to look like? Here's what we think. Continue reading

Rinsed or Raw? - Building Your Denim Rotation

Rinsed or Raw? - Building Your Denim Rotation

Shopping for denim can be an extremely varied experience, depending on who you ask. Some choose to invest in one, long-lasting pair, holding off on buying another until their previous option is no longer wearable. Others however, choose to embrace the variety of denim out in the world, amassing a collection of jeans to cycle through as they please.

Naked & Famous x Dutil Eyewear Collaboration

Naked & Famous x Dutil Eyewear Collaboration

After ten years of partnership, Dutil has finally collaborated with Naked & Famous on a special piece of (nope, not denim, but) eyewear! The designs are inspired by Japanese selvedge denim and are available in 3 different frame shapes. For those who don’t know, Dutil Denim’s Eric Dickstein got his start in the eyewear industry 20+ years ago, and his passion for eyewear hasn’t faded since. The N&F x Dutil Eyewear frames are handcrafted by artisans in Sabae, Japan. The frame has been constructed from a custom, three-colour laminated acetate. The three colours are, of course, inspired by traditional selvedge motifs: blue, red and white. Shapes are concise, with a subtle vintage feel. Authentic metal rivets also pay tribute to vintage denim. If you’d like to learn more about the N&F x Dutil Eyewear pieces, check out the Dutil Eyewear website.

Top 5 Tips for Making Denim Work Appropriate

Casual Friday, everyday? Clearly, we love denim and we think it can be worn for just about any occasion if you do it right. So, we’ve compiled a list of tips for making your denim work appropriate. Don’t worry, you won’t look out of place or too casual. These styles will have you looking professional and feeling comfortable. Top 5 tips for Making Denim Work Appropriate A perfectly tailored jean goes a long way It may seem obvious, but tailored pants are important. Likewise, tailored jeans are crucial to make your ensemble feel put-together and professional. To make your jeans work for the work place, make sure the initial fit is neither too big nor too tight. Your jeans should look like they were made for you. Sometimes, this may call for tapering of the leg and hemming the length to ensure the perfect fit. (P.S., dutil does these alterations!) 2. Fewer fades, more indigo There is really nothing like a solid pair of dark wash jeans. Though we love and fully support good denim fades, often too much fading can look too casual which is not what we want for the workplace. Try a classic dark indigo wash or […]

Deanna’s Picks: Doublewood Denim Super Narrow Selvedge

Doublewood on the daily Today on the blog, we’re spotlighting photographer Deanna Flinn and her top picks for the fall season. Deanna has chosen three looks that reflect the ongoing menswear for women trend. We love seeing both women and men mix up traditional fits and styles creating a unique outfit that suits them. Fresh for the upcoming fall season, Deanna picked the classic Doublewood Super Narrow fit to style in three different ways. Though technically this is one of Doublewood’s men’s fits, the Super Narrow looks great on women who are looking for a looser, but still slim, selvedge jean. Easy breezy Deanna’s first fall outfit pick is easy, everyday wear. Deanna has accompanied her Doublewood Super Narrow jeans with a classic white dutil tee…(Honestly, you can never go wrong with this look). We love the look of a perfectly oversized white t-shirt with a pair of Doublewood jeans for an easy weekend outfit. Throw on a pair of your favourite sneakers and even add a leather jacket and you have the ideal on-the-go, COMFORTABLE outfit for all your weekend adventures. Grey Days Just incase that white tee isn’t quite warm enough for the chilly days of fall, Deanna has […]

Soaked in Indigo: Your Shrink-to-Fit Toolkit (a.k.a.: Unsanforized Denim 101)

To Shrink or not to Shrink – Unsanforized Jeans Originally, we posted about shrinking unsanforized denim last September. With the good weather continuing, we thought it would be an ideal time to recycle these tips so you can take advantage of the sun for this shrinking process! After all, it’s Shrink-to-Fit Season.  Consider your first soak as a denim baptism – once they come out of the water, they’re a completely new, customized garment. Unsanforized Run-Down   Timing is everything – this adage rings especially true when it comes to the inaugural shrinking of a new pair of unsanforized (shrink-to-fit) denim. Our friends at Tellason explain that unsanforized denim is distinct in that it has NOT been “stretched, fixed and shrunk in length at the mill . . . Since unsanforized denim does not go through this process, it is expected to shrink up to 10% after the first soak.” The major advantage of choosing unsanforized denim is that despite the semi-arduous process, you can turn a standard (typically straight, relaxed) pair of jeans into a customized, tailored fit, depending on how you break in, soak and dry out the untreated denim. Levi’s put together a short film that expresses […]
